Newbury Leathers, Tortoise, USA Hides, USA Tanned, Leather Sides

Our Tortoise leather is a unique full grain leather featuring a naturally pebbled grain, a waxy surface, and an incredibly vibrant pull up. Out of all the Newbury Leathers we stock, this is the Buckleguy favorite. Where our Crazy Horse leather has more earthy tones, our Tortoise tannage has brighter tones. The Tortoise also uses a harder wax in production that causes the pull up of the Tortoise to be more 'bursting' than the Crazy Horse -  sharp & straight with crackly lines that spread out from center. The Tortoise is tumbled, making it naturally pebbled with different grain texture throughout the side. Natural pebbling accentuates the grain texture as opposed to a stamp on grain that is manufactured and more consistent.

The Tannery: Hides from the USA, tanned in the USA. Buckleguy House Leather.

  • Tortoise leather is produced from North American Bovine Cow hides. Full grain, hot waxed, and tumbled, this leather features natural pebbling and aggressive pull up. Vibrant colors in the pull up offer rugged and high contrasting tones making for incredibly unique products! The leather has a Semi-Soft hand with a highly waxed surface. The natural tumbling allows certain areas of the side to have a tighter pebbling and other areas to have a looser pebbling. Our Buckleguy favorite!
  • Tortoise vs Crazy Horse:
    • Tortoise has a softer temper as it is tumbled in the drums for a significantly longer time. The grain is naturally pebbled due to this, whereas Crazy Horse has a smooth grain. Tortoise uses a harder wax creating a 'bursting' pull up, compared to a more fluid pull up in Crazy Horse. Tortoise surface has a 'wetter' wax appearance where Crazy Horse has a 'matte' surface appearance. Tortoise typically has more vibrant color tones, where Crazy Horse is typically darker.
  • The leather is produced at a multi-generational tannery here in the USA. They are a 'made-to-order' tannery, adhering to strict requirements from clients at leading accessory fashion houses, boot makers, and the like.
  • The tannery complies 100% with all USA environmental protection laws.
  • All leather hides come from the USA, providing the tannery with the highest quality raw materials and a fully traceable supply chain.
  • 100% Aniline finish: The use of transparent aniline dyes allows the unique grain texture of the hide to be visible.
  • These leathers are commonly used for premium leather goods such as bags, totes, boots, saddles, duffles, briefcases, equestrian, and other small leather accessories.
